Terracotta Army Tours Compared

A museum guide and a tour with a transfer are two different things. Here is how group, private and half-day tours differ, and what to check before you book.

How Terracotta Army tours differ

Two kinds of offer get mixed up. The museum has its own guide service, which walks you through the halls once you are on site. A day tour or half-day trip from Xi'an adds a transfer, and sometimes a guide, the ticket and a stop at another sight. A hotel transfer is not part of the museum's guide service.

Whichever you choose, the museum ticket is sold by real name and passport, so the operator or you need your passport details for the booking. Compare the offers on pickup, guide language, group size, time on site, ticket arrangement and the return trip, not on the headline price alone.

For most first-time visitors, a tour with a transfer that states who buys the ticket and when you return is the easiest option. If you are comfortable with the Metro and a local bus, go on your own and add the museum guide on site.

The museum guide service

The museum has a guide service for visitors. In 2025 the fees were CNY 300 for a guide in Chinese and CNY 500 for a foreign language. That fee covers up to 5 people for 60 to 90 minutes, so it is a price for the party and not per person. A larger assembled group pays a separate fee. Confirm the current fees at the museum, because they may have changed.

The guide areas are the pits on one side and the mausoleum, with its bronze chariots, on the other. Do not assume that a single guided tour covers both areas for the base fee. Ask what is included before you pay. Whether a guide speaks German, or whether an audio guide exists and what it costs, is something to ask on the day.

What to check on any tour

Seven questions to put to the operator.

Pickup and return

Where does the vehicle start, at what time, and when are you back? The ride from Xi'an takes about an hour by taxi.

Getting there โ†’

Guide language

Ask for the language in writing. A German-speaking guide is not guaranteed on every departure.

Group size

A small group or a private car lets you move at your own speed. Large groups move at the pace of the whole party.

Time on site

Each of the two museum areas takes about 1.5 hours. A tour that gives you much less will cover only part of it.

The entry ticket

Find out whether the ticket is included. If not, book it yourself with your passport. See the ticket rules.

Lishan Garden

The bronze chariots are shown in the museum in the park. Check that the tour includes this area if you want to see them.

Extras and shops

Ask which stops and extras are optional and what they cost. A skip-the-line label does not remove the security check or the passport check.

Virtual tomb chambers are not the real tomb

In 2026, private virtual reality and extended reality offers were sold as an "official" look into the burial chamber. They are not access to the real tomb, which has not been excavated, and complaints about such offers have been made to the local tourism authority. If a package includes a VR add-on, treat it as an optional extra, check the price on its own line and decide on the spot whether you want it.

Some drivers and guides near the Qinlingxi stop steer visitors toward these packages. Booking a tour with a named meeting point before you travel avoids that.

Terracotta Army tours: frequently asked questions

Is a tour worth it, or can I go on my own?

Both work. A tour handles the transfer and often a guide, which helps if you do not want to change buses. On your own, you take Metro line 9 and a local bus, then add the museum guide on site if you want one. The getting there page has the routes.

How much does the museum guide cost?

In 2025 the fee was CNY 500 for a foreign-language guide for up to 5 people, 60 to 90 minutes. That is a price for the party. Confirm the current fee at the museum.

Do tours include the entry ticket?

It differs by offer. Some include it and some do not, so read the description. The ticket is sold by real name and passport either way.

Can I get a German-speaking guide?

It is not guaranteed. Ask the operator for the guide language before you book.

Does a skip-the-line tour avoid the security check?

No. Everyone goes through the security check and the passport check. A skip-the-line label only means the tickets are booked in advance.

Is terracottaarmymuseum.org a tour operator?

No. This is an independent travel guide with no link to the museum, any Chinese authority or any tour operator.
